Mexborough residents evacuated following recycling plant fire
Around 20 residents who lived close to a former recycling plant in Mexborough had to leave their homes due to the heat generated from a large pile of tyres which had caught fire in the early hours of Monday morning.
It took around 60 South Yorkshire firefighters to tackle the fire which began at 1:30am on Monday at the industrial unit in White Lea Grove. The blaze began with the tyres and soon spread to a brick building within the vicinity.
The fire service had to organise the evacuation of local residents, while others leaving nearby were advised to close their windows and keep their doors shut. Fire crews remained on site for the rest of the day as they attempted to put out the fire and assess the damage.
A number of local roads had to be closed following the fire, with the A6023 between Main Street and Oak Road shut in both directions.
The cause of the fire is still unknown and it is too early to tell whether the blaze was started deliberately or not.
No matter what the investigation uncovers in this instance, if you are a business owner and want to protect your premises against fire, then it is important to install all necessary fire preventative measures and ensure your staff have completed the necessary fire safety training.

Fire safety while at the gym
As you will know if you are a frequent visitor to and member of a gym, sports or leisure club, there can be a varying number of people on the premises at any given time. Therefore, it is extremely difficult, unless there are effective procedures put in place, to monitor who is using the facilities when an event such as a fire takes place.
Those who own and manage these types of organisations will need to be aware of such issues and ensure that their staff is on top of all procedures, reports and anything else relating to fire safety on the premises.
When you deal with this large amount of people, you need to install systems that account for who is on site any particular point in time. As well as this, sports and leisure clubs usually contain many different areas where staff are deployed and interchange. So, as you can see, there is quite a lot to consider.
Another potential issue all businesses need to address is the risk of arson. You need to regularly check the areas around as well as within the premises to make sure you are doing everything you possibly can to ensure this is not allowed to happen. Staff need to be trained accordingly on what to keep an eye out for and a system established for who should be checking where, and when.
A Fire Safety in Sports Clubs course has been devised to address all these issues and will help your staff in dealing with any potential hazards and how to put procedures in place to deal with a fire.
