The importance of fire safety when working in petrol stations
When it comes to petrol stations there are a number of different fire safety requirements than with many other types of business premises. Due to the extremely flammable fuels supplied on the grounds of a petrol station, it is absolutely essential to follow certain procedures in order to keep the area safe at all times.
As the manager of a petrol station it is your responsibility to keep the place in good order and ensure the safety of not just the business and your employees, but also the many customers who utilise the service throughout each day.
This is why it is necessary to always keep watch in spotting any fuel spills, while knowing how to deal with these correctly if any are found. You need to know precisely where the fire extinguishers and other fire equipment are stored and the correct way of using them in the event of a fire.
All staff on-site at any time should be well versed in all the right procedures, so a training course is necessary to cover all of the above mentioned issues. The specifics of Fire Safety in Petrol Stations will be highlighted on the course, with the attendees trained to Fire Warden standards in keeping with all current fire safety regulations.
Firefighters battle Suffolk farm blaze
It has been reported that over 40 firefighters were called to put out a fire which started in equipment on a farm close to Ipswich this Wednesday afternoon.
Fire crews tackled the fire at Hill Farm on Shotley Road in Chelmondiston at around 2pm, and a huge plume of smoke was seen coming from the property.
The blaze is then said to have spread towards woodland in the vicinity, but firefighters eventually were able to stop the fire from reaching a local equestrian centre.
A spokesman for the fire service explained that the crews would be on site for some time to ensure the area is secured and under control.
If you own a farm or in control of a similar business it is imperative that your workers are sent on an appropriate fire awareness training course, which has been designed to give your employees a thorough grounding in fire safety.
When you send your staff on a course such as this, you can make sure that they will know how to react and what procedures to follow in the event of a fire. They will be given training on how to deal with the situation in hand and meet all current regulations for the workplace.
Confirmation of Warwickshire fire station closures
As we reported a few weeks back, Warwickshire County Council was in consultation over the closure of a number of fire stations in the area. Now, it has finally been confirmed that three stations in Warwick, Studley and Brinklow are to be closed.
The council approved the proposals with an overall majority vote from the 58 councillors present and these changes and redeployment of resources are expected to deliver an improvement in the area’s fire services.
However, the Fire Brigades Union has moved quickly to express its concerns over having fewer stations to deal with fires in the area, following the result of the proposals.
Assistant general secretary of the FBU, Andy Darke, said:
“Clearly we’re not pleased with the result.
“It’s not good for the fire and rescue service in Warwickshire and it doesn’t bode well for the future.”
There were three options under discussion, but each would have seen a minimum of two county stations (out of Bedworth, Bidford, Warwick, Brinklow, Fenny Compton, Kenilworth and Studley) forced to cease its operations.
The opposition to save the stations were rejected by councillors, despite a number of protest marches held throughout Warwickshire. A petition against the closures was also delivered to the council in vain.
