Blaze breaks out in Wigan school
It has been reported that a fire in a Wigan primary school caused the premises to be evacuated last Tuesday morning.
Fire crews arrived at Canon Sharples CE Primary School shortly before noon as smoke alarms drew the attention of staff to the blaze which was thought to have started due to an electrical fault.
The fire, which began in the caretaker’s room, was contained by the fire doors and so there were no injuries in the incident.
It took firefighters around 45 minutes to extinguish the flames.
Deputy head-teacher Angela Holmes explained the importance of having modern fire safety equipment installed on the premises when she said:
“The building has only been here for about six years so everything is relatively new and we have the most up-to-date technology which alerted us immediately to the fire. The smoke alarm is hooked up to a computer system which tells us exactly where the problem is so we were able to act quickly and got all the children and staff out straight away.”
The fire only interrupted the school day for an hour and lessons resumed shortly after the Wigan fire crews said it was now safe to return to the school building.
Florist shop in Belper ravaged by fire
A florist was left devastated after a fire ripped through her store last Saturday morning, with the business now having to be run from home.
Christine Whitworth had kept Dial-a-Flower, located on King Street in the Derbyshire town, going for eight years but the blaze has caused extensive damage to the inside of the building.
It took around 30 firefighters to get the fire under control when they were called to the scene at around 9am, with smoke causing further problems for two nearby properties.
The fire may have been started by an electrical heater.
As she arrived at the store, Mrs Whitworth explained what she saw:
“I didn’t see any flames, just a lot of smoke but there must have been flames because the back of the shop is really badly damaged.
“I am just absolutely devastated. It is such a shock.
“Thank goodness it was not in the middle of the night otherwise it could have caused a lot more damage.
“All the accounts were in the shop but luckily I know most of my customers so, hopefully, I will be able to contact them. I will just have to try and do everything from home.”
Paul Sharp, watch manager at Nottingham Road fire station, said that the fire crews may have been alerted sooner if the premises had been fitted with a smoke alarm.

‘Quality rental property’ landlord guilty of safety breaches
A housing company claiming it “provides quality rental properties that are fully maintained at all times” has been fined nearly £40,000 after inspectors found that the flats breached several health and safety regulations.
Councillor Rizwan Malik who is the Director of Premier Housing was forced to resign from his position and is now also under investigation by the Labour party leaders.
The flats that are predominantly occupied by Eastern Europe immigrants were found to have faulty fire alarms and the general safety of the building was severely lacking putting all tenants at risk.
Councillor Louise Baldock said “I believe we should take every form of action against any landlord who breaks the law, irrespective of who they are or what party they are from”
