Elderly woman seriously ill after bungalow blaze
A pensioner is in a serious condition after a fire at her bungalow in North Wales. The fire broke out at around 10.45pm on Wednesday, 26th January.
Mrs Lloyd was rescued from the property and taken to Whiston Hospital in Merseyside where she remains in a critical condition.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said “This incident clearly highlights the importance of smoke alarms – in this case the alarms were linked to a system which alerted us to the fire.”
An investigation by North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the North Wales Police has begun to determine what started the fire.
Challenge of a lifetime – Terry runs New York Marathon
In the spring of 2008, Terry Gormley, Fire Training Academy Managing Director completed a trek to Mount Everest Base Camp. It was there that he was told about the Hospice and after hearing of the amazing work they do to help care for sick children and the support they give to parents, that he decided he must do something to help.
In June 2008 Terry began training for the New York Marathon. And there were just 18 weeks until the big day!
Working with a personal trainer, Terry began running regularly, gradually increasing the length of the runs and after a few injuries and 18 weeks – it was time to head for The Big Apple.
After delayed flights, slow taxis, a fire at the hotel and a four our wait on Staten Island in -1 degree Celsius, it was finally time for Terry to take on the challenge of a lifetime.
The marathon took Terry through the 5 boroughs of New York, and he completed the 26.2 miles in 5hrs 51 minutes. Terry said “I was totally shattered and I must admit in tears of emotion.”
Terry and his running partner raised an amazing £12,000 for their two charities, the Bluebell Wood Hospice and Children with Leukaemia.
Firefighters tackle Southampton shop blaze
This week, fire crews from the Hampshire area were called to a serious fire at a ground floor shop in the Newtown area of Southampton.
Firefighters from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, arriving at the scene, had to safely evacuate 18 residents early on Thursday morning.
At 4:40am fire crews were alerted to the danger at the shop in Derby Road and when they got there they could see how the fire was developing in this terraced area.
There were reports of injuries to three people, with two treated at the scene and the other sent to hospital with back injuries, but the swift work of fire personnel meant that the majority of residents were able to be led safely from their homes.
Watch Manager of St. Mary’s Community Fire Station, Shaun Cheeseman, said:
“By giving an early warning of fire, the working smoke alarm has given precious minutes for these residents to escape, and has no doubt saved their lives. This was a challenging fire that was well-alight on our arrival and our specialist fire investigation team are now working closely with the Police to establish the cause.”
The blaze was eventually brought under control by firefighters and so the investigation has now started into how the fire was started.
