Fridge fire destroys family home
A family of four have been left homeless after a fire starting in the fridge destroyed their Ball Green home on Saturday 22nd January.
19 year old Kyle Welsh raised the alarm when he came downstairs to get a drink. Kyle said “I went to get a drink and smelt smoke coming from the fridge and it smelt like hell when I opened it. It was like lots of dry ice coming out. We’re very lucky because the fire service said it would not have been the fire which would’ve killed us but the smoke because three inhalations of that and that’s it.”
On discovering the fire, the family turned the fridge off at the mains and attempted to tackle the fire but the flames were too big. The fire service arrived in just six minutes and extinguished the fire which had caused extensive damage to the home.
The family and their two dogs escaped unhurt but two pet snakes died.

Electrical Safety Week 2011
More than 200 house fires in 2010 were caused by misusing electrical appliances, and in 2007 more than 40 people died.
Electrical Safety week has highlighted the dangers of overloading electrical sockets and misusing electrical appliances.
County Fire Officer, Steve McGuirk said “A fire in your home is devastating, but many of these fires are preventable. It is really important that people make sure their appliances are in good working order and are used safely. The majority of electrical fires start in the kitchen so we would ask people to be extra careful in that are especially.”
