House destroyed in Worcester fire
Fire crews attended a fire at a house in Ramsons Close, Malvern Link on 23rd February after a neighbour noticed smoke and raised the alarm.
The call was received at around 2pm and the incident was attended by two fire engines from Malvern fire and extra support from crews from Worcester.
The upstairs of the property suffered major damage and the roof was completely destroyed. The property also suffered extensive smoke damage.
Station Commander Phil Major praised said: “Thankfully the woman and child escaped from their house uninjured, but the fire had taken hold and the roof of the property is now unsafe. There were wired smoke alarms in the property and we cannot stress enough the importance of having working smoke alarms on every level of your home.”
There were no injuries reported in the incident. An investigation into the cause of the fire will be carried out.
Fire at St Mary’s primary school in South Gloucestershire
A fire broke out at St Mary’s primary school in Yate on 24th February at around 5am.
The blaze caused extensive damage to the headteacher’s office and smoke damage to the reception classes. A play house and a large number of outdoor toys were also destroyed.
Fire investigation officer Jon Brown said: “There has been an incident at the school which started at around 5am this morning. Fire broke out in two separate locations at the same time and unfortunately in one of those locations the fire penetrated the roof area and has caused some smoke damage. Three appliances, two from Yate and one from Kingswood, have been in attendance overnight and we used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to put out the flames.”
Jacqie Berry, School business manager said: “As I was driving down the hill to get here I was quite relieved that there were no big flames. I think we were very, very lucky that the fire brigade are so near and came so quickly as they have minimised the damage. We haven’t been able to get in yet but I think there will probably be smoke and water damage to other parts of the school.”
It is not yet known how the fire started but an investigation will is now under way.
Electrical fault destroys house
A house in Chwilog, Wales was destroyed after a fire caused by an electrical fault in the electricity meter broke out.
Two crews and off road vehicles from Porthmadog, Blaenau Ffestiniog and Dolgellau were called to the incident at around 1.00am on 22nd February. The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
Glyn Jones from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “This fire highlights the danger of electrical fires. They can strike anytime, anywhere. It’s important to be as prepared as possible in the event of fire, by ensuring that working smoke alarms are fitted in your home and that you have clear escape routes to enable you and your family to exit your home as quickly as possible. We would also appeal to residents to ensure that areas housing electrical items such as fuse boxes are kept clear of rubbish, papers or other combustible materials which could aid fire spread.”
Mother and children escape house fire
A woman managed to escape from her home with her three children after a fire broke out in the roof space of their Lowerhouses home.
Fire crews attended the incident on Hall Cross Road at around 9.30am on 19th February.
Although the flames were quickly brought under control, thick smoke had spread into the two neighbouring houses. Firefighters used giant fans to blow it away.
A spokesman for the Fire Service said: “People should have smoke detectors on every level of their home, including the roof space or loft if it is used for storage or anything else.’’
There were no injuries reported in the incident.
Fire at Streatham restaurant
Fire crews were called to a fire at La Casita restaurant in Streatham at around 11am on 18th February.
The disruption caused traffic chaos as many local roads had to be evacuated and closed off for safety reasons.
A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said that around 15 people were evacuated from an adjacent business by police but no injuries were reported.
Around 10 per cent damage caused to the restaurant and fire crews used one jet, two hoses and breathing apparatus while at the scene.
