Man dies in Milton Keynes garage fire
A man has died in a fire that broke out at a garage in Milton Keynes.
The fire started at Pluto Autos on Church Street, Bletchley in the early hours of Saturday 1st September.
Police have confirmed that firefighters found the man in the workshop area of the garage and carried him out of the building but sadly they were unable to resuscitate him.
Greg Smith from Buckingham Fire and Rescue Service said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends and the local community.
Mr Smith added: “Firefighters will be visiting the area today to provide reassurance and offer fire safety advice to local residents.”
A spokesman for the police said that the death of the man was being treated as ‘unexplained’.
Oxford landlords fined for HMO safety breaches
Two landlords from Oxford have been found guilty of breaching licensing and safety regulations.
Mulazim Hussain and Momodu Chune were fined £6,730 and £665 respectively for the safety breaches.
Mr Hussain was the owner of a property used as a house in multiple occupation (HMO) but had failed to inform the local council of this. When an inspection was carried out, officers discovered that there were 10 occupants living in the property.
Many fire safety breaches were discovered at the property including faulty fire doors.
Mr Chune, was charged with similar offences after it was discovered he was leasing a property to seven occupants without the relevant HMO permissions. The smoke alarm in the property was not working and Mr Chune was unable to produce a gas appliance test certificate for the property.
Deputy leader Ed Turner told the Oxford Times: “The majority of landlords do a good professional job but we know in Oxford there is a minority who let their tenants down badly and sometimes put them in danger.”
Cambridgeshire library destroyed in blaze
A Cambridge library has been destroyed in a fire that broke out on Thursday, 6th September.
Firefighters attended the incident at Sawston Village College at around 2.20pm.
Crews evacuated everyone safely from the building and there were no casualties reported. Crews from Sawston, Cambridge, Saffron Walden, Royston, Huntingdon and Newmarket. battled the fire for several hours.
Eyewitness, Ollie Capes, said: “I heard all the commotion with fire engines then saw smoke billowing from the oldest part of the college. You could see the fire was about 25 feet up in the air and I believe that maybe the library had collapsed as well.”
Maurice Moore, from the fire service, said: “Firefighters worked extremely hard to put in fire breaks at either end of the library and stopped the fire from spreading.”
