Hostel owner fined after man dies in fire
A Blackburn hostel owner has been ordered to pay £3000 in fines after pleading guilty to breaching fire safety regulations.
Mr Sajed Hussain owns the Devonshire Hostel in Blackburn, Lancashire where a fire broke out in 2008 killing one person.
Prosecutor Joe Hart said: “It is impossible to say, if the evacuation had been speedier, whether Mr Barker would have survived. Accordingly, the Crown cannot say there is a causal link between the failure admitted and his death.”
The Devonshire Hostel has now been fitted with an adequate fire detection and alarm system.
40 prisoners evacuated in prison fire
A Wiltshire Prison put its emergency fire evacuation procedure into action yesterday when a fire broke out at around 9.15am.
Three fire appliances attended the incident which broke out in a two-storey cell block at the prison in Erlestoke.
Forty prisoners were evacuated from the building and three fire engines attended the incident.
A spokesperson at the local fire brigade, confirmed that the fire service had carried out fire drills at the prison earlier this year to ensure they would be fully prepared for such an incident.
It is not thought that the fire was started deliberately, and no casualties have been reported.
The effectiveness of fire evacuation training
Many people would view the evacuation of a building as a straightforward procedure. However, the reality of the situation means that there are plenty of things you have to consider. It is certainly not just telling people to leave the building in an orderly fashion.
Another important point to make is that evacuation tests are a legal requirement for any fire safety strategy. This will be part of a fire risk assessment, which is key to ensuring the safety of your employees and any visitors to the premises.
Fire wardens should be trained in carrying out these evacuations according to an efficient evacuation plan. On the fire evacuation training course there will be scenarios to implement which makes it all the more real and allow your fire warden to learn how to approach any problems that could occur, as well as the dangers to keep an eye out for.
Your organisation should already be carrying out evacuation drills on a regular basis, but it is necessary to do this in the right way. If you have any disabled people or those with mobility issues on your premises, the course will also help you to ensure they are aided during the evacuation procedure.
The course will be conducted by those with experience in the fire service and so you can rely on them to give your business the most suitable training it requires.
Restaurant blaze leads to flat evacuation
Following a fire in a Glasgow restaurant, situated right below their flat, a family with a young child had to be rescued by firefighters.
The evacuation proved to be successful as the fire crews swiftly answered the call and attended the scene at the top floor flat at about 11pm on Tuesday night.
This was a necessary measure after a fire had been started in the Steak and Cherry restaurant in Sauchiehall Street.
It is believed that the blaze may have originated from the kitchen of the premises and 11 fire engines and about 70 firefighters were needed to extinguish the flames.
The rescue operation was carried out by the fire crews using ladders to bring the two men, two women and young child down to safety. They were then taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary as a precautionary measure.
A Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said:
“On arrival the crews were faced with a rapidly developing fire involving the restaurant itself and spreading to occupied residential tenement flats above.
“Due to the construction of these property types, hidden fire spread via enclosed voids and spaces, are notoriously difficult and dangerous for crew to tackle.”
As well as the flat above the restaurant, other premises were also evacuated due to the incident.
