The need to consider an effective fire alarm solution
Fire alarms are not just something every homeowner needs to carefully consider in order to reduce the danger to lives in the event of a fire; business owners should also seriously think about the installation of the right kind of fire alarm system on their work premises.
A fire alarm system is crucial in the unfortunate scenario that a fire breaks out in the office or factory. The presence of the fire and smoke will be detected by the alarm and the response can mean a number of things depending on the type of equipment you select.
Due to the fact that there is a wide range of fire alarm systems available to buy these days, it is becoming more and more important to choose the most appropriate one to your requirements and circumstances.
The right solution will differ from business to business and so should be implemented according to your needs. There are entry-level as well as more complex systems on the market and these can include; conventional alarms, twin wire fire systems, automatic fire detection, wireless alarms and remote monitoring.
Why not discuss your requirements with the fire safety professionals who not only can supply these fire alarm systems, which comply with the current legislation, but also offer installation and maintenance services too.
Who fire training courses are aimed at
It is important for business owners, employers and those in control of premises are aware about current regulations regarding fire safety in the workplace. This means that as the person responsible for ensuring that this legislation is being followed correctly, you need to determine which members of staff should go on fire training courses.
According to the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which states that you “must ensure that your employees are provided with adequate safety training”, this requires you to send every member of staff on a suitable fire awareness course.
Whether they are working for you as a permanent employee or on a part-time basis, even as an external contractor in something like security, you still need to make sure that they have had fire awareness training.
Once this has been achieved you also need to comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2006 which expects you to have enough competent individuals to perform evacuation duties in addition to carrying out regular checks on the fire safety systems installed on your premises, so that they are in full working order. To this end, you need to consider sending selected members of staff on a fire warden training course too.
Welsh Assembly agree to principles of new fire safety measure
It has been reported that the Welsh Assembly Government have agreed unanimously on the general principles of a new fire safety measure regarding the installation of automatic sprinklers in newly built Welsh properties.
The measure, which was put forward by Ann Jones, the Labour AM for the Vale of Clwyd, on the 24th of November this year, would ensure that all these new homes would need to have this fire safety equipment fitted by builders.
Although the support for the measure was unanimous, recommendations were still offered by the chair of the legislation committee, Rosemary Butler AM, as to its implications over how the water supply will be provided and maintained as well as the impact on affordable housing.
She also warned that the installation costs are likely to be more than the original estimate given when the measure was introduced.
The Finance Committee’s chair, Angela Burns AM, countered that although the cost to developers may be higher, the housing market itself should not be impacted significantly if the measure were to be agreed upon.
It was also suggested that the systems may prove to be a plus point to potential house buyers looking at these properties.
The amendment measure will be considered by the legislation committee who are concerned that fire takes the lives of around 20 people in Wales every year.
