Tate Gallery St Ives fire: Fears over smoke damage
More than 300 visitors and staff were evacuated from one of Cornwall’s most important art galleries yesterday (Monday) after a deep fat fryer caught fire in its kitchens.
The blaze at Tate St Ives started at around 12.30pm on Monday and three engines from the Cornwall Fire & Rescue service attended the scene.
Fire services confirmed that the blaze was extinguished by just after 2pm and crews used breathing apparatus to search the four-storey building and a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear smoke. Emergency services left the scene at 3.30pm.
Staff at the Tate Gallery in St Ives, Cornwall, fear some its artworks may have suffered smoke damage in a fire.
An inspection of the art contained in the gallery is to take place but staff have confirmed it will reopen.
Summercourt fire destroys 37 buses in Western Greyhound fleet
Fire has ripped through a bus depot near Newquay.
The fire has destroyed at least 37 buses – a third of bus firm Western Greyhound’s fleet.
At its height, crews from St Columb, St Dennis, Newquay, St Austell, Perranporth, Wadebridge and Launceston were battling the blaze at Summercourt.
The fire in Summercourt, near Newquay, broke out in the early hours of Monday morning.
In Cornwall about a third of services are not operating or have been delayed, although services are running normally in Devon.
Western Greyhound has been operating buses in both counties since 1998.
It describes itself as a “locally based, family-run business”.
The cause of the fire is being jointly investigated by Devon and Cornwall Police and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service.
No-one was hurt but almost forty buses have been destroyed.
Man ‘critical’ after Abingdon care home fire
A man is in a critical condition after he was rescued from a fire at a care home in Oxfordshire.
The blaze broke out at about 04:15 BST.
the 48-year-old was rescued from The Knowl on Stert Street, Abingdon and was treated at the scene for burns and smoke inhalation before being taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.
Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Thames Valley Police are investigating the cause of the blaze, which is being treated as unexplained.

Fire fighter hurt at cannabis factory fire in Grangetown, Cardiff
Fire service says cannabis factory discovered at property in Grangetown area, after officers called to house fire.
A firefighter who suffered burns to his back and shoulders while tackling a blaze a South Wales house which was being used as a cannabis factory has been released from hospital.
The alarm was raised by a member of the public at 02:48 BST on Sunday morning.
At the height of the incident, more than 40 firefighters from stations in Cardiff and Barry fought the fire.
South Wales Fire and Recue said they discovered the cannabis factory on the upper floor of the house.
A fire service spokesperson said the house was well-alight when the fire officers arrived.
South Wales Police said neighbouring houses were also evacuated for a time.
Clare Road was closed for 12 hours but has now reopened to traffic.
The fire service said the fire fighter has been discharged from hospital.

Father hospitalised after saving disabled son from Northampton house fire
Earlier this week a father helped rescue his disabled son from a house fire in a Northampton estate and is believed to have suffered burns to his shoulder.
At 8.30pm on Tuesday night a number of properties in Arbour View Court, Thorplands, were evacuated after a blaze started in a two-storey house.
It is believed that the father rescued his three children, two of whom have cerebral palsy, before firefighters arrived who then confirmed that the family managed to escape the house before emergency services arrived.
Police have said a fire investigation is continuing and a cause of the blaze is not yet known.
